Travel New England, The Marriage Equality Promised Land

We should have arrived yesterday in Maine. It would have been much later than we thought, as usual. We took the route through Massachusetts to get there, so I thought we’d stop off in Northampton to sample a little lesbian culture before we headed east again.

That was before we realized we’d left Frances’s stroller at an abandoned gas station in Bennington. Detour to Holyoke to buy another Snap-n-Go, which we assembled in the entryway to Babies R Us.

Back on I-90, the dominant highway of our trip, it began to snow. Hard. It wasn’t sticking, but it was enough to slow traffic to a halt. It was dark; we were tired. We called my aunt in Auburn, Massachusetts, and stopped there for the night.

We Made It!

Yesterday we’d planned to make it to Youngstown, Ohio. But when we checked our AAA camping book, we figured out there weren’t any listings near Youngstown. So we parked it early in a KOA in Streetsboro. It was a nice break, but the early stop resulted in a very long drive today.

Marriage (and Other LGBT) Rights in Michigan and Ohio

Yesterday I had a bright idea: instead of stopping every hour (sometimes every half hour) to eat, gas the car, walk the dogs, or change the baby, we should do all of that and then drive for three hours. Straight, if you’ll forgive the expression. So that’s what we did. The dogs and I held our pee. Frances didn’t cry because of her diaper. Ami played me podcasts and read me e-mail and interesting tweets. The car cruised along at its set 65 mph, and it was almost easy to forget we were driving.

Until the car started to slow down. Sure, you probably knew that was coming, and why the car was slowing down. But I didn’t. I looked at the speedometer. I looked at the cruise control indicator. I think I even checked the gas pedal.

Marriage (and other LGBT) Rights in Minnesota

On our way to Iowa we took a wrong turn and wound up passing through Minnesota. Going down the two-lane state route that took us into Iowa from the southwest tip of Minnesota was harrowing. It was raining, and every time a truck passed us going in the opposite direction we were overtaken by a deluge of rainwater. But it was worth it, since we got our great shots at the Iowa border. We wouldn’t have been able to turn off for a photo op on the Interstate.

So including this morning’s minor detour into Michigan, that’s four states whose LGBT rights we haven’t covered. Good thing that the Country Table Family Restaurant has Wi-Fi and bottomless cups of coffee. This morning I will backtrack and do Minnesota.

Trailer Life, Volume II

So far we’ve only had pleasant encounters at RV parks. I’ll admit we were a bit worried when we started out–mainly because we tend to visit the gayer parts of the more liberal cities. Guys decked out in camo vests, Navy enthusiast hats, and ‘going into the marsh’ boots usually don’t hang out there.

But they do hang out in RV park offices, especially when it’s so freakin’ cold outside. So freakin’ cold that when we pulled in at 10pm to a sign reading, “Hoses will be pulled and water shut off at 8pm,” I screamed a little on the inside. You can’t shut off my water! People don’t live without water! Seriously.
