District of Gay, or Why Barney Frank Can Kiss My Ass For Saying We Shouldn’t Have Come

What was supposed to be a second or third stop for the day became our first stop: the Milk and Cookies welcome for LGBT parents and kids. Frances is not exactly of cookie-eating age, but it was a good way to meet other parents at the march. I was a little worried that it would be ill attended–after all, we’d heard that nobody would be able to make the march because it was so hastily planned.

As soon as we entered the hotel where the event was held, I knew I had worried for nothing. We followed the sound of children laughing, playing, screaming until it led us to the second floor ballroom. The place was packed. Every table seemed to be full. Set out were art supplies, and kids were making signs, hats, banners, bracelets, you name it.

We Made It!

Yesterday we’d planned to make it to Youngstown, Ohio. But when we checked our AAA camping book, we figured out there weren’t any listings near Youngstown. So we parked it early in a KOA in Streetsboro. It was a nice break, but the early stop resulted in a very long drive today.

Marriage (and Other LGBT) Rights in Michigan and Ohio

Yesterday I had a bright idea: instead of stopping every hour (sometimes every half hour) to eat, gas the car, walk the dogs, or change the baby, we should do all of that and then drive for three hours. Ami played me podcasts and read me e-mail and interesting tweets. The car cruised along at its set 65 mph, and it was almost easy to forget we were driving.

Until the car started to slow down. Sure, you probably knew that was coming, and why the car was slowing down. But I didn’t. I looked at the speedometer. I looked at the cruise control indicator. I think I even checked the gas pedal.

Marriage (and Other LGBT) Rights in Illinois and Indiana

I have to say, these posts are getting a little tedious. I like having the information, and I like sharing it. But it takes lots of time to research and compile, and with these long days of travel, time is something we don’t have in excess. I’m not complaining–well, maybe I am.

Wouldn’t it be great if I could just say, “LGBT people have the same rights as everyone else–in all fifty states”?

But I guess that’s why this trip is happening. Because we can’t say that. Because nearly every one of the fifty states has its own way it discriminates against LGBT people. It’s also why we’ll be at the National Equality March this weekend.

OK, enough complaining. Back to business.
