Ami and Ruby’s Infinite Playlist
I’m working on our playlist tonight.
There’s nothing like a good sing in the car.
I’m stocking up heavily on Led Zeppelin, White Stripes, and Faith No More. I’m hoping Wifle and Frances will accept a bit of Alice in Chains and White Zombie (you never know!), but then to soften the blow I’m adding Ella Fitzgerald and the Ditty Bops. Then, for some mellow mountain stretches, maybe some Crosby Stills and Nash, a dash of Sergio Mendes and Brasil ‘66, maybe a spattering of Steely Dan. Bringing it off the highway and back into town will be some old Madonna, definitely Prince, and a thick layer of Eurythmics.
I read once that a relationship moves into a new level once your books have intermixed on the shelves. It’s so true. The next step is when your wife realizes that you know all the lyrics to Primus’ Frizzle Fry. Now that’s intimacy.
Suggestions for the playlist, anyone?

I can’t tell you how happy I am that I’m not the only Faith No More fan left!!! I get the oddest looks when I mention any of their songs, such a shame.
I would HOPE you sang along to “Moon Over the Freeway” at the top of your lungs.
Also, if you haven’t heard the new Muse album, it’s *brilliant*, and very “Anti-idiocy” if you get my drift.
Bowser, we saw the most incredible moon over the freeway this evening. It made me think it might be possible that people actually went there, it was so close. But my laptop has more computing power than they did in 1960-whatever. For chrissakes. Who sings Moon Over the Freeway? I want a piece of that.
Hey CraftLass– I am in love with Mike Patton. He’s in line for Third Wife position. Just kidding, RightWingers!! Is there anything more beautiful than him singing Smaller and Smaller? I think not. Midlife Crisis? Kindergarten? OK, and then there’s the War Pigs cover…
Alright, I’m simmering down. There are few bands that have such a mastery of musicality. Whether it’s because of Mike’s operatic training or excessive drug use, I don’t care.
Have you heard of Lovage? OMG. It’s one of his side projects, and it’s probably the reason I’m married today (Ruby and I saw them in concert before we got together…). Check out “Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By”. Seriously.
Why, the Ditty Bops sing that song, of course! They have an entire album named after that song.
Know what you should do if the moon looks that close? Take out a cracker and hold it out the moon-roof(haha). Maybe you’ll come back with a delicious, cheese-spread-covered cracker.
Hmm, suggestions suggestions
John Butler Trio, Leonard Cohen, Tori Amos, Tracy Chapman, Flaw, Amanda Palmer, Common, VNV Nation, Nine Inch Nails, and to top it off… Miles Davis.
Also, stop at cities and find a good used record shop, see if they’ve got any local bands they like
Oh, also, Ozomatli (embrace the chaos has some great butt shaking songs, and is a fun driving record), and if you’re in the mood for some … weirder music try OOIOO.
OH, gosh, Ami, I have been in love with him for years, too! Liked him better w/ long hair but who can resist ANYONE that beautiful and with that talent, lol. He might be a scary addition to the family, though.
I keep wishing the karaoke places would stock their rarer stuff, it’s incredibly fun to sing their songs, even without operatic training and with the weird looks I get.
Thanks for the tip, I haven’t heard Lovage but that will change very quickly.
I like road songs when I am on the road. For you, definately Roger Miller’s King of the Road. I dare you not to sing along even if you HATE COUNTRY AND WESTERN. Taj Mahal – the hands down by far best version of Six days on the road plus I rode some. Tom Petty -me n del were singing little runaway. I was flyin- Best singalong album Graceland which is all about traveling. Then I always throw in Neko Case and the Sadies whether I am moving or standing still.
You guys, these are great suggestions, thanks!
I’ll supplement our Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Jerry Reed and Bad Livers with some Roger Miller today. Gotta find a used record store for some Ozomatli, Muse, John Butler Trio. (I also love thrift shopping on the road. I’m always on the lookout for old T-shirts that are good candidates for muscle shirts.
)I can’t believe I forgot Graceland!
I heart OOIOO. Heartheartheart!
